n this time of Coronavirus that we’re in with self-quarantining and social distancing, the internet has been ablaze with live stream battles between hip-hop and R&B greats like Mannie Fresh, Scott Scorch, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. This Friday, the Latinx artists are getting in on the action with a legendary showdown between reggaetón icon Luny of Luny Tunes and his apprentice-turned-hitmaker Tainy.

Luny Tunes, comprised of Dominican duo Francisco Saldaña (Luny) and Víctor Cabrera (Tunes), were the go-to producers during reggaetón’s first global breakthrough. They were behind hits like Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” and Wisin y Yandel’s “Rakata.” The guys took Puerto Rican producer Marco Masís, who is more famously known as Tainy, under their wings for their Mas Flow compilations. With reggaetón’s new wave in the past decade, Tainy emerged as a force in the genre. He worked most of J Balvin’s Vibras album and executive-produced Bad Bunny’s debut effort X 100PRE.

In recent years, Luny Tunes have remained mostly quiet on the music front, allowing for producers like Tainy and Alejandro “Sky Rompiendo El Bajo” Ramírez to shape reggaetón’s latest sound. Thanks to the folks at Rapetón, Luny will be coming out hiding to face off with Tainy in a beat battle. The perreo intenso will go down on Friday, April 17 at 9PM ET on their respective Instagram accounts.
